The Justice Department announced on Friday that a Gambian man who served in an armed unit under former President Yahya Jammeh and was found guilty of torture by a U.S. jury in April had been sentenced to more than 67 years in prison. Due to the victims’ alleged involvement in a coup attempt against the then-president, Michael Sang Correa, a Gambian national, was found guilty by a Colorado jury of participating in the torture of multiple victims in Gambia in 2006, including beatings and the burning of their flesh.
According to a statement from the department, Correa, 46, was found guilty on one count of conspiracy to conduct torture and five charges of torture. Senior Judge Christine Arguello for the District of Colorado sentenced him to 810 months in prison.
