Former top government official Baltasar Ebang Engonga was found guilty of embezzlement and given an eight-year prison sentence by an Equatorial Guinean court.

Following the online disclosure of sextapes featuring him and other women, Engonga rose to fame.

Engonga was found guilty by the Bioko provincial tribunal of misappropriating funds intended for professional travel expenditures for personal use, according to Supreme Court communications director Hilario Mitogo.

He also received a $220,000 fine.

Five additional high-ranking officials, including Engonga, the former chief of the national financial investigation agency, were put on trial for allegedly embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars in public monies.

The lawsuit comes after he was arrested in November when social media revealed footage of him with women, including other officials’ spouses, while the embezzlement accusations were still being investigated.
