A commercial tricyclist tragically lost his life on Wednesday morning after a fully loaded trailer suffered a suspected brake failure and caused a multi-vehicle collision at the Ekoro Junction along the Abule-Egba/Command Road in Lagos. Two other drivers sustained serious injuries in the fatal crash.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the day, involved a six-tyre trailer, a tricycle, a Honda Pilot, and a Toyota Camry. According to eyewitnesses and preliminary reports from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the trailer was descending the road when it lost control.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the trailer, in its uncontrollable descent, initially rammed into and crushed the tricycle beyond recognition, killing the adult male operator instantly.
LASTMA operatives and other emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene, where they successfully rescued the two severely injured victims—the drivers of the Honda Pilot and the Toyota Camry—who were then taken to a nearby General Hospital for urgent medical attention.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the crash as lamentable and preventable, reiterating the authority’s commitment to enforcing traffic regulations. This tragic event once again brings into sharp focus the urgent need for stringent enforcement of vehicle maintenance and regular checks, particularly for heavy-duty trucks, to safeguard the lives of commuters and other road users in the state.
