The Benue State chapter of the Ahmed Bola Tinubu Support Group 2027 is contesting the state government’s decision to demolish part of their newly inaugurated office complex in Makurdi, though the government insists the action was necessary for infrastructural development.
Officials of the Benue State Urban Development Board carried out the demolition on Thursday, targeting the perimeter fence and gate of the support group’s office, along with other structures in the vicinity.
In a statement, the Benue State Government confirmed the demolition exercise, asserting that it is part of the state-wide commitment to facilitate the dualization of the Makurdi/Enugu Road.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor explained that the exercise is comprehensive, spanning the Wurukum–Yaikyor–Apir–Ikpayongo axis, and is focused on clearing the government right of way.
Official Stance: The government maintains that owners of legitimate structures duly approved have been compensated, but those whose properties lacked approval or were illegally erected on government right of way were duly notified and directed to vacate as such structures contravene town planning regulations.
The Director General of the Ahmed Bola Tinubu Support Group 2027, Dr. Aker Kpev, sharply contradicted the government’s claim, stating that the office was inaugurated recently and that they had not received any official notice from the Urban Development Board prior to the demolition.
Dr. Kpev hinted at potential political motives behind the sudden action, given that the demolition only targeted a section of the building. The group has reported the incident to relevant authorities, demanding a thorough investigation to ascertain the “real reason” for the demolition. The incident highlights the recurring friction between political factions within the context of necessary, but often controversial, urban development projects.
