Super Eagles Players Boycott Training over unpaid allowances ahead of World Cup play-offs.
The Super Eagles players and officials boycotted training in Rabat, Morocco, ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup Africa play-off match against Gabon over unpaid allowances and bonuses. The players’ protest stems from unresolved payments dating back to 2019, including bonuses for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the upcoming World Cup qualification campaigns.
The entire squad, as well as technical staff, refused to participate in training sessions until the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) addresses their financial grievances and clears outstanding dues. The players allege that the current NFF leadership has neglected their contractual obligations, despite pledges to resolve the issues.
This boycott has cast uncertainty over Nigeria’s preparations and ability to perform in the upcoming play-off. The team was camped at The Rive Hotel in Rabat, with notable players such as Calvin Bassey, Samuel Chukwueze, and Alex Iwobi among those involved in the protest. The situation escalated shortly after Alex Iwobi shared a video highlighting the poor living conditions at the team’s lodging.
Fans and analysts have expressed concern over the NFF’s management of the national team’s welfare, emphasizing the need for transparency and timely payments. As of now, the NFF has yet to make an official statement regarding the standoff. The Super Eagles remain hopeful for a swift resolution to continue their quest for World Cup qualification.
