Hurricane Melissa’s death toll has risen to 28 in Jamaica, Prime Minister Andrew Holness warned that more fatalities may yet be confirmed as rescue and recovery teams continue to access hard-hit and isolated areas. The Category 5 storm caused widespread destruction, particularly in western Jamaica, with many communities still cut off by flooding and debris. Over 60 percent of the island remains without electricity, and emergency shelters are housing thousands of displaced residents. Field hospitals are being set up to address urgent medical needs as the country copes with this devastating event.
