The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has issued a stern advisory to residents, announcing a total prohibition on the sale, purchase, and use of firecrackers, knockouts, and other explosives throughout the upcoming Yuletide and New Year festivities.
The directive, released on Monday by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, is part of a proactive security strategy to ensure a safe and peaceful festive season in Abuja.
The Command stated that the decision was taken in the interest of public safety, noting that the indiscriminate use of pyrotechnics poses serious threats to life and property.
Police Command Statement: “Firecrackers pose serious safety hazards, including injuries, fire outbreaks, and widespread panic. They also create opportunities for criminal elements to mask unlawful activities, thereby endangering vulnerable members of the community.”
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, emphasized that the use of these items causes unnecessary fear and anxiety, disrupting the public peace that the police are mandated to sustain.
The police are warning residents and traders that they will conduct strict enforcement of the ban. Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and tactical units have been ordered to carry out intensive patrols and ensure that the order is adhered to across the territory.
The Command strongly urged the public to comply with the directive, stressing that anyone found selling, possessing, or using firecrackers or fireworks will face immediate arrest and prosecution under the relevant laws. Residents are also encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspected violations to the police immediately.
