The Nigerian government has firmly pushed back against threats of U.S. military action following President Donald Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged persecution of Christians. Trump, escalating rhetoric, warned that if Nigeria continues to allow killings of Christians, the U.S. would halt all aid and could take swift military action described as “guns-a-blazing” to eliminate Islamic terrorists.

Nigeria has rejected claims of a targeted Christian genocide, emphasizing that Islamist militants such as Boko Haram attack people of various faiths across the country, which is roughly split between a Muslim-majority north and a predominantly Christian south. Nigerian officials state there is no evidence supporting claims that only Christians are victims.

While welcoming U.S. assistance in combating armed groups, Nigeria insists any help must respect its territorial integrity and sovereignty. The government dismissed Trump’s threats as political and part of a forceful negotiating tactic rather than a reliable policy stance.

Analysts note Trump’s statements are likely shaped by domestic political considerations, targeting his support base by highlighting Christian protection globally. Nigeria has urged coordination and de-escalation, warning against rising tensions following the threats.
