Nigeria has unveiled Africa’s largest fibre optics factory located in Sagamu, Ogun State, marking a major milestone in the country’s digital and industrial transformation. Commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the facility, established by Coleman Technical Industries Limited (CTIL), can produce up to nine million kilometers of fibre optic cables annually.
This locally funded factory is a significant boost to Nigeria’s telecommunications infrastructure, supporting the federal government’s ambitious Project BRIDGE to deploy 90,000 kilometers of fibre optic network across the country. The project aims to enhance broadband penetration, digital inclusion, and technological self-reliance in Nigeria and across Africa.
The factory not only reduces reliance on imported cables but positions Nigeria as a continental hub, supplying infrastructure projects throughout Africa. It also incorporates Africa’s first fibre-reinforced plastic production plant, showcasing advanced manufacturing technology.
The inauguration was attended by Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Dr. Bosun Tijani, who hailed the facility as a defining moment for Nigeria’s industrial growth and digital future. The Ogun State Government was praised for creating an environment conducive to investment.
This development aligns with President Tinubu’s economic vision to elevate Nigeria to a $1 trillion economy by fostering local manufacturing, job creation, and expanding the digital economy. The fibre optics factory is expected to accelerate broadband deployment, support technological innovation, and strengthen Nigeria’s leadership in Africa’s digital landscape.
