In Tuam, Ireland, authorities have commenced a full excavation at the site of a former mother and baby home where a mass grave containing the remains of infants was discovered. The excavation marks a significant step in addressing one of Ireland’s most haunting human rights scandals.

The Tuam site gained international attention in 2014 when a local historian uncovered records suggesting that nearly 800 babies may have been buried in unmarked graves on the property. The institution, run by Catholic nuns, housed unmarried mothers and their children in the mid-20th century.

Families of the victims and advocacy groups have long demanded full excavation and proper identification of the remains. This week, heavy machinery arrived, and forensic teams began carefully removing soil in search of remains and personal effects.

Irish officials say the process will take months, and DNA testing will be used to try to reconnect remains with surviving relatives. The government has also pledged continued support for survivors and their families.
