A worker tragically died after a partial collapse of the Torre dei Conti, a medieval tower in Rome, Italy. The incident occurred during renovation work on the 13th-century tower near the Roman Forum.
The worker, a Romanian national named Octay Stroici, was trapped under debris for nearly 12 hours before being rescued. Despite emergency efforts and prolonged resuscitation, he succumbed to his injuries in hospital. Another worker remains critically injured, while others escaped unharmed.
The collapse happened in two phases on the same day, complicating rescue operations and raising concerns about safety during restoration of historic structures. Italian authorities are investigating the causes of the collapse as the area remains cordoned off for safety.
“Resuscitation attempts were made for about an hour to save Octay Stroici,” Italian news agency ANSA said, citing the Umberto I hospital.
“Despite this, spontaneous cardiac activity could not be restored” and his “death was pronounced at 12:20 am.”
